This mechanism was discovered by the Marauders — James Potter, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin — during their school years. Peter Pettigrew, as the smallest of the group and an unregistered Animagus who could transform into a rat, could slip beneath the attacking branches and press the knot, allowing the others to enter the tunnel.
